Leonardo DiCaprio nominated for Oscar

A Long History Of Leonardo DiCaprio's Academy Award Nominations Ahead Of The 88th Annual Award Show

The 88th annual Academy Awards are just days away, and many observers believe 2016 is the year Leonardo DiCaprio will finally take home a statuette.

Dicaprio, 41, was nominated for best actor on Jan. 14 for his starring role in “The Revenant.” Since the announcement, the internet has been abuzz over whether he will finally bring home the win after years of being overlooked. While many fans seem to believe the actor is a shoe-in for the Oscar, it’s hardly the first time he’s been up for the highly coveted award. In fact, he’s got five other nominations under his belt to date.

Below is a full timeline of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar nominations:

1993 - Best Supporting Actor:

Shortly after bursting onto the acting scene, appearing in films like "This Boy's Life" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape, " DiCaprio was nominated for his very first Academy Award. The Oscar nod was for his supporting role as Arnie Grape in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." Despite his boyish charm and stellar child-acting skills, DiCaprio lost to actor Gene Hackman.

2005 - Best Actor:

DiCaprio's second nomination came after the 2004 release of "The Aviator." In the film the California native plays Howard Hughes, a billionaire filmmaker, hermit and well-known aviation buff who learns that by moving to Hollywood he can combine his three passions in life. Once there he begins building one of the biggest companies in the world while also producing a flight-based film. DiCaprio lost the Academy Award to Jamie Foxx, who was nominated for his leading role in "Ray."

2014 - Best Actor/Best Picture:

Seven years later DiCaprio got his third Best Actor nomination for playing Jordan Belfort, a power-hungry, egotistical Long Island millionaire, in 2013's "The Wolf of Wall Street." As was reported by Time magazine, Matthew McConaughey was pegged to win the award despite DiCaprio's stellar performance. The "Dallas Buyers Club" star did win, leaving DiCaprio without an Oscar once more.

"The Wolf of Wall Street" was also nominated for best picture. The comedy was pitted against "Philomena, " "Nebraska, " "Captain Phillips, " "12 Years a Slave" and "Her." "12 Years a Slave, " directed by Steve McQueen, won the Academy Award.

2016 - Best Actor:

After years of getting his — and his fans — hopes up, many believe DiCaprio's Oscar-less streak will be coming to a close. He is currently up against Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl"), Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs"), Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo") and Matt Damon ("The Martian").
