Leonardo DiCaprio has had a bit of a tough ride at the Academy Awards.
He’s been nominated five times over 22 years, with four Best Actor nominations – five including 2016 – and one Best Picture nomination for The Wolf Of Wall Street, and yet, until last night, he had never picked up a gold Oscar statuette.
We wondered sometimes if he had ever even held one.
Memes and gifs have followed in the wake of Leo’s losing years and it became a running joke that he would never ever get an Oscar.
Of course all the bookies are predicted that 2016 would finally be his year thanks to his incredible performance in Alejandro G. Inarritu’s cold and brutal story, The Revenant, but let’s take a look back at all those losing faces.
1994: Nominated for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?
(Picture: Youtube)This year is Leo’s first year nominated and the wide-eyed youngster looked pretty broken-hearted not to have won.
The gong went to Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive but we bet Leo was thinking: ‘No worries, plenty more years to come…’
2005: Nominated for The Aviator
(Picture: Youtube)It’s Leo’s second year of losing an Oscar for Best Actor but he’s okay.
He’s got Gisele Bundchen sat next to him, Jamie Foxx was a deserved winner for his role as blind musician Ray Charles and Leo had won his first Golden Globe award just a few weeks prior.
2007: Nominated for Blood Diamond

Look at that face. You can tell that this is starting to get to Leo now, and understandably so.
He lost to Forest Whittaker who gave a gorgeous acceptance speech but God damn it, Leo is now down three for three and every single one of those performances was completely deserved of an Oscar.
2014: Nominated twice for The Wolf Of Wall Street (Best Actor and Best Picture)
‘Just keep smiling.’
It’s 2014 and Leo has now lost all four of his four acting nominations. He lost out to Matthew McConaughey for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club and then he also lost out on a Best Picture nod after 12 Years A Slave stole it out from under him.
Always the bridesmaid, and never the bride, hey Leo?
2016: Nominated for The Revenant
