Backstage, Vikander said she hopes The Danish Girl — based on the life of transgender woman Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of gender confirmation surgery — will inspire social change. “I came on this film only two years ago, and I know that this was not an easy film to get made, and it’s been almost 15 years that one of our producers has worked on it, ” she said. “To see the cultural change with just me over the year since I actually finished the film with… Caitlin Jenner and with Transparent and Tangerine, it’s like a social change. I just wish that in the same way that this film has been so educational for me… I hope that it can open up an even wider conversation.”
Prior to The Danish Girl, the Swedish-born actress appeared in period dramas like and . “She can have this aura of rigor and toughness. She has a wonderful strength to her.”
Earlier this awards season, Vikander nabbed Golden Globe nominations for both and her other star-making role in Alex Garland’s . (She also appeared in The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) Vikander is next starring in and both out later this year.
