Academy Awards for 2014

Looking back at the 2014 #Oscars on Twitter

Tonight, Hollywood royalty gathered to celebrate the 86th Academy Awards. Throughout the evening, acceptance speeches, tributes and spontaneous selfies made us laugh, cry, smile, and of course, turn to our Twitter stream for the #Oscars party.

During the live show (8:30 p.m.-12:00 midnight ET) there were more than 14.7 million Tweets around the world containing terms related to the telecast. Including the red carpet and conversation immediately following the show (5:30 p.m.-12:10 a.m. ET), there were 17.1 million Oscar-related Tweets. The live reach of the conversation in the U.S. will be measured and shared by Nielsen tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT. The research firm will provide impression numbers, number of unique authors, and more data.

The power of Twitter as the perfect companion to TV shone through, as Ellen (@TheEllenShow) organized a real-time star-studded selfie during the program, with the stated goal of making it the most retweeted Tweet, ever.
Her plan worked:

After the show, @TheEllenShow’s follower growth was 47 times more than her average daily growth rate this year.

Not surprisingly, selfies emerged as a theme for the evening. Take a look at this montage to get a sense of the most shared selfies and photos of the night:
