Quentin Tarantino penned the script for and directed the movie, which beat out "Zero Dark Thirty, " "Amour, " "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Flight."
Tarantino's spaghetti-western stars Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson and tells the tale of a slave looking for his wife.
"Zero Dark Thirty" was an early favorite for this category. The film's depictions of torture, and the role it played in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, have been a source of near-constant contention since its release. A number of senators and other government officials have come out for or against the movie. Screenwriter Mark Boal and director Kathryn Bigelow at once defend the film's accuracy while also arguing that "depiction is not endorsement."
Last year, "Midnight In Paris" beat "The Artist, " "Bridesmaids, " "Margin Call" and "A Separation" to take home the Oscar in this category.
Seth MacFarlane hosted the broadcast, which included a tribute to James Bond, a "Les Miserables" performance, Ted, a "Chicago" reunion and live singing from the likes of Adele and Barbra Streisand.

Ben Affleck Is Not Into Oscar Punditry
From backstage at the Oscars:
When did you feel a tipping point in your favor for this film?
Clooney: Michelle Obama.
Ben: When they gave us the trophies I was confident that we would win. I don’t get too much into the Oscar-ology and the pontificating. It doesn’t help me to read up on that stuff.
Daniel Day-Lewis' Facial Hair
Backstage at the Oscars with Daniel Day-Lewis:
Was it uncomfortable wearing the beard?
What do you mean? No it's just a beard. Do you wear your hair? It was my very own beard.
