Shine Oscar winner

Sam Smith Responds to Oscars Controversy: 'My Point Was to Shine

Sam Smith is further clarifying his remarks from Oscar night.

While accepting the award for best original song, Smith shared that he was proud to be the first openly gay Oscar winner...except that isn't true. Twitter - particularly openly gay Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black - immediately fact-checked him, and also pointed to his less-than-ideal comments in the press room backstage, where he seemed to be unaware of the history of many LGBT Oscar winners.

Now, Smith is clarifying his remarks on Twitter. After first noting that the win "genuinely feels like a dream" (and that he's still hungover), Smith shared, "Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn't my point. My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly. Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack I'll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar x."
