Oscars 2015: What you didn't see on TV

Neil Patrick Harris sauntering around backstage in his “tighy whities” is the Oscar moment that just might top Ellen’s viral celebrity selfie. Spoofing Best Picture nominee Birdman, the underdressed Oscar host made his way to the stage—on his way getting snapped by paparazzi, signing autographs, and running into Miles Teller, who just happened to be rocking out the movie’s soundtrack on a sweet set of drums.

Sunday night the biggest night of the year for Hollywood and there’s plenty of action on camera—celebrity selfies, funny opening numbers, actors getting cut off mid-speech and more. But there’s a whole lot more that happens off camera. EW was on the scene at the 87th Academy Awards to fill you in on everything you didn’t see on television.

On the red carpet:

++Arriving at the Dolby Theatre with his mother as his date, Best Original Song winner Common admitted that he expects the Academy to give the award to Glenn Campbell. “But I don’t know, ” he said. “We’re at the Oscars. This is the biggest stage of all. So if it has to end, it might as well end here.”

++J.K. Simmons said he was really glad he wore a hat. “Best style choice I ever made.”

++”I got choked up this morning, ” said Graham Moore, nominee for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Imitation Game, thinking about all the time he’s spent with his Imitation Game family comes to an end tonight. “I guess we’ve got one last party and then it’s all over.” He was walking his mother and brother into the Dolby Theatre.

During the show:

++Alejandro Iñarritu and his wife, Maria, drinking champagne in the lobby bar. When asked if he’s nervous, he replied, “About getting a drink? No. I can’t be nervous yet. This is three hours long. It’s too long for any movie, and it’s too long to be nervous. If you have to get up in the middle to go to the bathroom, it’s too long.”

++”I feel like I just gave birth to 100 butterflies, ” says The Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum’s wife, Janne, about the stress of the Oscar season.

++The Lego Movie Phil Lord and John Stamos of Full House fame exchanged niceties at the bathroom sink:

Lord: I just wanted to say, you probably don’t remember me, but I wrote for this show [Clone High] you were in a million years ago.

Stamos: Oh, hey man. What are you doing now?

Lord: I directed this weird Lego movie.

Stamos: Oh yeah?! Is it nominated?

Lord: No. Just for song. So anyway…

++Rosamund Pike paused in the star-packed downstairs lobby at the Dolby, momentarily transfixed by the image on a bank of monitors of host Neil Patrick Harris in his tighty whities. The Gone Girl star, a best actress nominee, betrayed no pre-category jitters, finding solace in the strong showing by her countrymen in marquee categories including Felicity Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne. “There’s a little bank of English actors of course and glad to be part of that, ” Pike said. “I knew Eddie Redmanyne from home and of course Sienna Miller is presenting. I wish I wasn’t the only flag flyer for our film but I’m happy to be here.”

Downstairs #Oscars lobby flooded with people. Not exactly a vote of confidence for the broadcast as Must See TV.

++On the show and being a nominee, American Sniper screenwriter and nominee Jason Hall said, “You weirdly feel like a prop. You walk back in and some stranger is sitting in your seat, talking to your wife.” When asked if he needs to go back in for his category, he joked, “Maybe my wife will just do it…Or the seat filler.”

++Lady Gaga full on bawling backstage, almost stumbled face first after tripping on her own dress. “I’m going to go have a drink.”

++ “You all knew that was going to happen!” Common, on Julianne Moore winning Best Actress during his backstage speech with John Legend.

++”Chrissy Teigen has been crying since we won the Oscar but didn’t want to get caught on camera and become a meme again, ” said John Legend.
