Backlash against white Oscars, ignores Latino nominations

For the second year in a row the Twitter hashtag #OscarSoWhite has followed Oscar nominations. Of all the major categories only one person is someone of color, and this has sent many people to point fingers at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Still, Mexicans and other Latinos and people of color can rejoice in the fact that Alejandro Iñárritu‘s movie “The Revenant” cleaned up with 12 nods in all.

When the news came out on Thursday morning Twitter erupted over perceived snubs of actors Idris Elba and Will Smith and a possible best picture nod for “Straight Outta Compton, ” which did get recognized with a screenplay nomination.

It wasn’t just Twitter that recognized the lack of diversity in the main Oscar categories. The New York Times and the Associated Press also ran stories about the mostly white nominees. The Times article was headlined, “Oscar Nominees Are Nearly All White, Except ‘The Revenant’s’ Iñárritu.”

“I really was disappointed. What is important is that this entire conversation of diversity is here and that we are talking about it. And I think we will not just talk because people will say, ‘Well don’t just talk. You gotta do.’ Talking gets to the doing, and we are going to do, ” Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs told the AP.

But it’s also another huge year for one of Mexico’s hottest directors who won the best directing Oscar for “Birdman” in 2015. Iñárritu stands to make Oscar history if he wins best director and his film wins best picture. As the website awardswatch.com points out all six of Iñárritu’s films have been nominated at least once. He could also become the first director since David Lean in 1957 and 1962, to win best director and best picture Oscars on back-to-back nominations.
