"Lincoln" (unsurprisingly) tells the tale of President Abraham Lincoln's attempt to end slavery. Steven Spielberg directed and Daniel Day-Lewis starred in the title role.
Ben Affleck directed and starred in "Argo, " a tense historical thriller about the CIA's rescue of American embassy workers during the Iranian hostage crisis.
Tom Hooper's take on "Les Miserables" brought Victor Hugo's depressing musical to the big screen with more than a little help from stars Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.
"Zero Dark Thirty" is director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal's controversial docu-drama on the hunt for Osama bin Laden. A number of anti-torture senators have vowed to investigate the film, which they say inappropriately positions enhanced interrogation techniques as pivotal to the successful capture and killing of the terrorist. (Bigelow and Boal maintain that they had no agenda when creating the movie.)
Come Feb. 24, the night of the awards broadcast, host MacFarlane and a merry band of presenters will hand out hardware to those who collected the most votes from members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a group made up of working professionals in cinema. More information on the voting process is available at the Academy's website. The Golden Globes - which take place Sunday - are not voted on by members of the industry, but by the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Ben Affleck Is Not Into Oscar Punditry
From backstage at the Oscars:
When did you feel a tipping point in your favor for this film?
Clooney: Michelle Obama.
Ben: When they gave us the trophies I was confident that we would win. I don’t get too much into the Oscar-ology and the pontificating. It doesn’t help me to read up on that stuff.
