'Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?' actress jokes at the Academy Awards.
Sandra Bullock won the award for Best Actress at the 82nd annual Academy Awards for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy in “The Blind Side.” Bullock, a first-time nominee, took the stage and offered praise for her fellow nominees Gabourey Sidibe for “Precious: Based on the Novel ’Push’ by Sapphire, ” Helen Mirren for “The Last Station, ” Carey Mulligan for “An Education” and Meryl Streep for “Julie & Julia.”
“Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?” Bullock joked with the audience. “I would like to thank the Academy for allowing me this last month to have the most incredible ride with rooms full of artists that I see tonight, that I’ve worked with before and hope to work with in the future, who have inspired me and have blazed trails for us.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I know, ” she continued. “Everyone who has shown me kindness when it was fashionable, I thank you. To everyone who was mean to me, like when George Clooney threw me in a pool years ago, I’m still holding a grudge!”
Bullock offered her thanks to the family that “The Blind Side” was based upon and also praised mothers “who take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from.”
“Those moms and parents never get thanked, ” she said through tears. “There is no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else — we’re all deserving of love.”
During the Oscars’ opening moments, co-hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin jokingly teased that they would soon find out whether the world loves Bullock, who had just received the Worst Actress Razzie for “All About Steve” earlier in the day. Based on the actress’ freshly earned statue, it appears they have their answer.
