Revived its awards-season momentum tonight, taking the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 22nd annual SAG Awards. The Revenant‘s Leonardo DiCaprio scored his first win in nine nominations, and Room star Brie Larson won for her first.
Meanwhile, diversity was more than a trend at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles: Idris Elba won twice, Viola Davis and Uzo Aduba both picked up a their second consecutive Actor trophies — for How To Get Away With Murder and respectively — and Queen Latifah won for Bessie.
Introducing the Beasts of No Nation clip, Elba said: “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to diverse TV.” Earlier, OITNB co-star Laura Prepon summed things up in accepting the show’s cast award: “Look at this stage. This is what we talk about when we talk about diversity — different race, color creed, sexual orientation.”
Netflix and repeat winners ruled on the TV side. The comedy cast Actor went to the streaming service’s Orange Is The New Black for a second consecutive year, and Downton Abbey won the drama prize for the third time in four years. Meanwhile, Netflix also was behind the repeat wins for Uduba and Kevin Spacey, the latter for House Of Cards, and Elba’s supporting turn in the feature Beasts Of No Nation. (He also won for BBC America’s Luther.) Rival streamer Amazon got a win with Jeffrey Tambor’s star turn in Transparent.
The Actors Branch is the largest in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, so DiCaprio and Larson could have a leg up on Oscar night. Ten of the 20 Best Ensemble winners at the SAG awards have gone on to Academy Award glory (the category was introduced in the awards’ second year). Birdman turned the double trick last year, and that film’s Michael Keaton was onstage at the end for a second straight year as part of the Spotlight cast.
Carol Burnett, the Queen of Sketch Comedy, got a pair of standing ovations while accepting her Life Achievement Award. “When I got my variety show, one of the major things I wanted to do, and I loved doing, was our takeoff of movies, ” she said. “This time we had costumes designed by the brilliant Bob Mackie, a full orchestra … in essence we mounted a musical comedy revue every week — and oh God we had fun.”
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, no strangers to sketch comedy on TV, were reverent in presenting the award. “We both grew up watching The Carol Burnett Show, ” said Fey. “Besides seeing how funny she was and how beautiful she was, she was also the boss and it was her show.” That, she said, made her realize “we could get paid to make comedy with our friends and also be their boss.” Added Poehler: “We watched Carol with our moms, and our moms taught us 90% of what we needed to be the women we are today. And the other 10% is Carol.”
