SAG Awards 2016: Uzo Aduba wins best actress in a comedy

Twice is nice for Uzo Aduba. The Orange is the New Black star raked in another Screen Actors Guild Award for best actress in a comedy.

The 34-year-old thanked her “phenominal cast, ” and also series creator Jenji Kohan for “creating a show like this and putting this on television, creating a show that reflects so many people.”

She also spoke to “the actors who are at home, not here in this room with us but hoping one day to be in this room with us, ” telling them to “keep trying, to keep plugging to keep working. No matter if anyone tells you to get out of that line that you’re waiting in, stay in line, you have the chance, it is yours.”

Through three seasons, Aduba’s Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren has been one of the more complex characters on OITNB, a show rife with them. Throughout the rough patches, her earnestness never wavers and always shines.

Aduba broke through in a category with elite comic company. She nabbed the hardware over three-time winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the self-centered President in Veep, Amy Poehler as an idealistic city government go-getter in Parks and Recreation, Ellie Kemper as a recently freed prisoner of a religious fanatic in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Edie Falco as the titular Nurse Jackie.

Speaking backstage after her SAG Awards win on Saturday, Aduba reflected on what people are drawn to with her OITNB character.

“I know for myself what I love about her is her authenticity. Her honesty. Her willingness, despite the challenge, that is to love and just even existing authentically as herself. She still risks it, despite the challenge that it takes to be that much herself. I love that about her, ” she said. “She’s entirely purely herself, and that’s what I like about her.”

She also expressed gratitude for the role she says made her an actor.

“When I think about it, that day, that time, the day before even, the day that I got this job, that sight is not so…it’s still visible in the rear view mirror of my life. I can still see it. It’s not so far back, so distant that I can’t recall that feeling and I can’t remember that day, ” she said, adding, “Just the other day I happened to be scrolling through my Facebook and a young actor had written me about the business and agents and I just felt like there are so many people who have so much to give to this art form, who have so much to say with their art, that I just wanted to acknowledge that because I know the feeling.”
