With another "Star Wars" film comes another Oscar nomination for composer John Williams for his work on "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning.
Joining Williams, a multi-Oscar winner, with nominations for Best Score are more names not unfamiliar to the category: Ennio Morricone for "The Hateful Eight, " Thomas Newman for "Bridge of Spies, " and for "Sicario" is relative newcomer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who earned his first Academy Award nomination last year for "The Theory of Everything." While these nominees have all been nominated before, Morricone, Newman and Jóhannsson have never taken home an Oscar.
Rounding out the list of nominees is Carter Burwell for director Todd Haynes’ "Carol." Burwell has worked on several of Haynes’ films, as well as with Spike Jonze, and Burwell has scored 17 Coen Brothers films. This is his first Oscar nomination.
Williams' work on the original "Star Wars" trilogy earned him Best Score Oscar nominations for each film. He won the Academy Award for the first film and four other statuettes throughout his lengthy film career. However, despite numerous nominations, Williams hasn’t won the Oscar since his taking home the Academy Award in 1993 for "Schindler's List."
