Amy Winehouse film wins Best Documentary Feature at the 2016 Oscars: "This is for the fans who loved her"

Kapadia said: "Wow... thank you to everyone who voted for us, the academy... everyone who trusted us to make this film.

"This film is about Amy and showing the world who she really was, not the tabloid persona. We just wanted to make a film to show the world who she really was."

The news might upset Amy's father Mitch, who recently revealed that he didn't want his late daughter Amy to win a award at the Brits.

The popular singer - who died July 2011 - had been nominated for a British Female Solo Artist, for the album Amy (Original Soundtrack Album).

Mitch WinehouseReleased years after her death, the soundtrack featuring demos and unreleased songs, to coincide with the documentary film about her life in 2015, which fit within the eligible time frame to be considered.

Speaking of the nomination he said: “At least she’s being nominated for her music, for the soundtrack from the film, so that’s quite positive and it just shows you Amy’s still up for awards five years after her passing.

Mitch then revealed on the ITV daytime that his reasons for wanting other singers.

“Yeah, because it’s as a result of the film, the soundtrack of the film. You know really Adele should win it hands down shouldn’t she? But I’m not sure how people win the Brit awards I don’t know if it’s on number of albums sold, I haven’t got a clue.”

"Weird, we only found out that the qualifications to be nominated is be in the Top 40 last year, " Mitch told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby. "You have Jess Glyne, Adele... at least she is being nominated for her music."
