The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced the tally on Monday. Last year, there were 323 films eligible; in 2013, it was 289.
To be eligible for 88th Academy Awards consideration, a feature films must open in a commercial theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, Dec. 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.
The Academy dictates that a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format. A film is ineligible if its first public exhibition/distribution is not as a theatrical motion picture release; in other words, a film-festival debut is OK, but a launch online isn’t.

Nominations for the 88th Academy Awards will be announced on Jan. 14, at 5:30 a.m. PT at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 28, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live by ABC Television and live in more than 225 countries/territories worldwide.
